The suppression of feelings is killed to death. Students wait on traffic lights. Horns blare. Panic rises. Your voice must stay calm. Calmness spreads. Tension shrinks. A single careless sighing is enough to spoil weeks of work. Theory is equally serious. Road law. Liability. Documentation. You are swept away in paper work in your profession. One of my teachers once rubbed, rubbed, rubbed his folder and explained to me, This will keep you out of trouble on a bad day. He meant it.

Supervised teaching time examination. There is a more elderly teacher sitting in the background stupid as a mute. You lead the lesson. Then there is the crash of the feedback. Too many orders simultaneously. “Good anticipation there.” It stings, but it sharpens. Simulators add safe chaos. Heavy rain. Sudden obstacles. Brake failure drills. Heart begins to jump yet the room is not bad. It is preferable to sweat today rather than to get panic tomorrow.

Business skills also appear. Pricing. Scheduling. Handling cancellations. Filling quiet weekdays. Talent will not afford to settle the bills. Somewhere there is indeed a change somewhere along the line. You loosen the lever on the wheel with every shaking. you read the body language in the set-up shoulders, shallow breathing, too confident of you and passing it on as humour. You shift the color with the turning of a radio.

Training of driving instructors is a way of reforming instincts. Any intersection is a lesson. Each wrong a stepping stone. The starting point is that you are a driver and you think that you can teach. A teacher who finishes that longs to find patience, timing and a steady voice are more useful than a pedal.
